STEP TWO: Blend the colors using a small paintbrush and water. A lot of the bleeds will be covered up by white paint later on, so don’t worry too much about making them perfect. Let this dry completely and wash your paintbrush before moving on to the next step.

STEP THREE: Paint a row of semicircles across the top of the lettering using the tip of your paintbrush and white paint to create the first line of scales. Each of my semicircles was about ⅓ inch (9 mm) wide, but this can vary depending on how large and wide your letters are. In general, roughly two full scales should fit within the thickest part of the downstrokes.

Next, paint a second row of semicircles, but offset them by half a semicircle. The highest point of each of the semicircles in this row should intersect the lowest point of each of the semicircles in the row above. This should create a shape similar to a teardrop.

Repeat this process moving downwards until you reach the bottom of the letter, then repeat for the rest of the quote.

TIP: You could also use a dip pen for this step to get thin precise lines. If you choose to use a dip pen, I recommend turning the here degrees to the right—left if you are left-handed—to avoid smudging.
